Beej's Diving Gear - Full Face Mask

Hello Scuba Folks. Today I decided to let you all in on what I dive with so you could get a better idea of how close our gear is and if it relates to your diving gear or not. For those of you that own your own gear you all know that it can be a lot of gear. So I am going to post picks and update on one item each post. Today I am going to post about my Ocean Reef Neptune Space Iron Mask. Here is a link to the manufactures website if you want to check it out for yourself. www.oceanreefgroup.com

The mask is quite the mask. If you look on the website you will see that the mask has been designed with a lot of thought. One of the reasons I choose this mask is because the website claimed that the mask was specifically designed to be used in contaminated water. With me volunteering as a rescue diver for the Columbia Drag Boats there are times that I have to swim in some pretty messy water. There has been a time when I had to swim oil. alcohol and fiberglass shards. That one really felt different. :) The fiberglass would puncture the skin and then the alcohol would take over from there. I bet you can figure from there as to just what I am talking about with the uncomfortable feeling from that. :) But anyways, back to the mask. After looking at some of the other masks I can see what the manufacture was thinking with the external parts being designed and built with the materials there were. I mean here is a list of some the external items that is exposed to the contamination.
  • Inhalation diaphragm, Exhalation valve, Purge button and Face seal composed of FVMQ rubber
  • Stainless steel AISI 316 frame, buckles and adjustment knob
  • Anodized Anticorodal®, Front Cover.
After looking at some of the other brands of FFMs one of the key features that I like about the Ocean Reef Neptune Space Iron Mask is there are 6 locations for the straps to hold the mask in place. The others that I looked at had 5 strap locations. Now let me clear something up first. I HAVE YET TO DIVE THIS MASK, and I am NOT putting down any of the other masks. I am simply stating the obvious and what I think about those obvious points. Once I finally dive the mask then I will have first hand comments about the easy of diving with this mask and once I have dove with some other masks then I will be able to compare the masks I HAVE dove with. Please don't take what I say as gospel about the products. I am simply stating my opinion and you are welcome to take that for face value. I will blow up any one's chimney because they are being nice to me. I will blow up the chimney of a product that works for ME. I advise you to try and dive the gear for yourself once you have narrowed it down to what you are looking for. Hopefully what I post here will give you some knowledge that will give you some tools to make a little bit more educated decision then before you came here. So there I go again ranting off the topic of the Ocean Reef Neptune Space Iron Mask. Back on the features, I found that the adjustable nose plugs on the Ocean Reef Neptune Space Iron Mask or any Ocean Reef Neptune masks to work better for my and face shape. I like the fact that the Ocean Reef Neptune Space Iron Mask comes with adjustable nose posts that you can replace that moves the plugs closer to your face or further away from your face. Check out the pictures.

Once you have decided the correct depth then you can spin the plugs, the mounting holes are off-set, to position then just right so when you need to adjust your ears for the altitude pressure change then you can do so easily enough with out pinching your nose or the cartilage at the end of your nose. Again let me say that this is all just from looking at the mask and once I dive it I will definately let you all know what I think of it. So I have been sitting here in from of the computer long enough, it is time for me to go get wet. Happy and safe diving folks. Blog at y'all later!
